Bumper Stickers & Summary

Bumper Stickers:
As I walked through the parking lot located in front of my dorm building (Westfall), I realized how heterogenous the culture here at Colorado State University is. I searched the parking lot for a few minutes and saw a popular theme of the Colorado State Flag in various shapes/messages. A lot of these students with this specific type of bumper sticker are from Colorado, and clearly are proud of their home state such as the ever common NATIVE sticker. The NATIVE sticker is used by Colorado natives to symbolize the proud and unique tradition of being born and raised in the state of Colorado.  There were some people who were out of state that had stickers displaying there proud sense of attending school in this aesthetic state that we are lucky enough to call home. Next, I walked through the parking lot of the Home Depot and saw a rather different theme. This parking lot was more diverse than the dorm one, but there was a common theme displaying military pride. As I searched all around the parking lot, I saw that most of the cars were displaying many different military branches. One of the common ones read “I Love My Marine”. Due to the fact that we are located in Colorado, there is numerous military installations nearby. These bumper stickers would display the family-focused aspect. Therefore, I have came to the conclusion that the people of Colorado are extremely proud of there state they live in, and the things that they themselves and their families accomplish.

Summary: “Open Letter to Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi” by Nathan Brown
This letter illustrates the situation where students were fighting against the tuition increases, and in turn experienced police brutality on the UC campuses. This took place in 2011, and the letter was very strongly written voicing Brown’s opinion about this issue. Nathan Brown is an assistant professor at UC Davis, and Brown felt as though Chancellor Katehi was to be held accountable for this horrendous police brutality that took place. Additionally, Brown demanded that the chancellor would immediately resign her position. “Others are seriously injured. One of them, forty-five minutes after being pepper-sprayed down his throat, was still coughing up blood. This is what happened. You are responsible for it.” (page 125). This quote really hit me hard due to the fact that it displays the true horror of the police brutality that occurred. At the end, Brown concludes this strong willed letter by stating that the chancellor’s words express concern for the safety of the students, but her actions do the opposite. Brown claims that she is unfit to fulfill the requirements of her job.

Bumper Sticker Assignment

I observed a parking lot in Old Town Fort Collins and one on campus by the Durward residence hall for this assignment. The stickers I saw while walking downtown were brewing company stickers, broncos, colorado logos, U.S. army stickers, a baby on board sticker and a CU sticker. There wasn’t really a thematic message that fit all of those bumper stickers but most of them represented community and safety. For example, the “baby on board” sticker showed that Fort Collins is town full of younger people who care about safety and are family-oriented.
On the other hand, while walking through the CSU parking lot, there was less of a variety of bumper stickers. There were countless CSU stickers, skiing stickers, Colorado stickers and Oakley stickers. There was definitely an outdoor theme to most of those bumper stickers. A lot of students like to show off the school they belong to because it is their new home and a huge part of who they are for the next four years. Both parking lots had stickers representing community and the outdoors which are two big aspects that Fort Collins has. A big difference that I saw between the two parking lots was that most of the bumper stickers at CSU targeted a younger demographic than the ones in Old Town. It is very easy to see the similarities that Fort Collins has with CSU which make community such an important quality here.

Summary:
The thesis to “Open Letter to Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi” is “You are responsible for the police violence directed against students on the UC Davis quad on November 18, 2011. As I said, I am writing to hold you responsible and demand your immediate resignation on these grounds”. One of the key points the writer made was that the faculty members of the school stood and protested with the students and one was even arrested for doing so. Another key point was that the administration of UC campuses systematically uses brutality to terrorize students. The writer also pointed out the letter that Katehi wrote trying to promote a commitment that UC Davis made to ensure safety for students. “‘While these are turbulent economic times, as a campus community, we must all be committed to a safe, welcoming environment that advances our efforts to diversity and excellence at UC Davis’”. Brown uses a letter that Chancellor Katehi wrote to display the hypocrisy in her actions. Brown also then proceeds to destroy Katehi’s requests in her letter by following it up with the two violent actions that were performed on the students and faculty. Brown ended the letter by explaining how Katehi is unfit for the position she is in and should resign.

Bumper stickers and Summary

Bumper stickers can tell a lot of a persons heritage and origin of where they come from. As I wondered through my first parking lot at Edwards residences hall, quite a bit of stickers told many stories. Weather they they came from the busy cities of California or the small towns of Kansas and the Dakotas. In the end thought they all had something in common CSU! CSU ram stickers, Colorado State University stickers and our logo were by far the most popular of the bunch that I saw. Another one that I saw was the Colorado native sticker with an out of state twist. It read "I'm not a native but got here as fast as I could". I thought that was hilarious because it reminds people that they came to a great state to experience the college life. The second parking lot I visited was a Walmart which was a short 10 minute drive from campus. Although there were quite a bit of CSU bumper stickers others told different stories. I ended up finding a lot more family stickers. Such as the classic stick figure families or the goofy ones like the the dinosaur eating the family and the zombie stick families. In all where ever the person who owned that car came from their bumper stickers told a small part of their story and how they came to be here at Colorado State University.

Summary: Open letter to Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi
In the article written by an Assistant professor in the department of English named Nathan Brown. In this article he tackles the main conflict of police brutality on the college campus University of California at Davis. Recently there have been multiple accounts of police brutally beating peaceful student protesters with batons. Many being hospitalized after the attacks. Although it did not stop there after setting up tents and protecting them by linking arms the police resulted to tear gas and pepper spraying students involved in the peaceful protest. In the end Brown clearly calls for the resignation of Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi for being unfit for providing safety to students at University of California at Davis.

Faculty Doors and Open Letter Summary

Faculty Doors, Autumn Howard

For the assignment of reading faculty doors, I looked at my Residence Assistant and National Residence Hall Honorary Student’s doors in my hall since I am currently undeclared. I was interested to analyze their doors in a deeper context because we pass them by on a daily basis without taking time to look at them. Even though both doors were decorated to some degree, they both told different stories.

My Residence Assistant’s door is filled with pictures, artwork, and signs that depict her different interests. When looking at the door, you can tell that she enjoys Harry Potter from the owl holding a letter with her name. However, underneath the surface appearance you can tell that she is a creative and welcoming person. Displaying a wide variety of her interests and hobbies, it is apparent that she is not afraid to open up to people. Her postings also show that she is creative and confident.

The member of the National Residence Hall Honorary on our floor, however, is much more organized; showing his different achievements through his organization, and less personal interests. Still, the door is inviting but it sends a message of structure and coordination. His door shows his dedication towards NRHH and his priority towards student involvement. These characteristics illustrate a hard worker who values togetherness and stresses the importance of doing your best.

Both of the doors in my hall offer a deeper understanding of the individuals interests, values, and concerns. Although the doors had different approaches, both students admire fellowship and involvement on campus.

Summary

In an open letter to Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi written by Nathan Brown, he expresses his extreme frustration regarding police brutality on different UC campuses, specifically the UC Davis campus. Brown describes how the Chancellor “ordered police outfitted with riot helmets, brandishing batons and teargas guns” to remove the students’ tents on campus. “Without any provocation whatsoever” police used pepper spray, batons, and physical force to unlink the students and even arrest some individuals. Many students were injured; some students were even hospitalized.  Nathan Brown voices his discontent by demanding the immediate resignation of Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi and to address the safety of the students.

Bumper stickers are previews

Will Sawyer

When you go out into a parking lot you can discover little things about a person you have never met before. The stickers and decals can show what brands a person likes what time of year they prefer based on that brand. There was one BMW that I walked by the other day it had a NVR Summer decal, a Denver skyline sticker, a Colorado state flag sticker, and a monarch mountain sticker. With this little snippet of information you can guess that this person is a snowboarder who enjoys riding at monarch mountain and has pride in being a resident of Colorado. These little pieces can only give a preview of a person but there is always more.

Bumper Stickers in Fort Collins

Bumper stickers are quite common in the United States and are used by car owners to represent a point of view or an achievement which could be athletic, religious or even humorous. The fact that many people proudly stick bumper stickers to their cars can be used to gain insight into someone’s personality or their thoughts. This allows us to gauge the likes and dislikes or the trend of thought of a group of individuals or a community.
When walking through the parking lots at the police station or the lot at Parmelee Hall, I noticed a good amount of diversity present in the choice of bumper stickers on cars. Other than the abundant ‘CSU Rams’ and ‘I love Colorado’ stickers, I saw quite a number of political and student organization related stickers. As the elections are coming up, a lot of people are using bumper stickers as a way to express their points to view. On the other hand, some individuals are using stickers as a means to mock a particular candidate by using sarcasm. This is evidence of the diversity of opinion present on campus as different people from different cultures gather to study in one institution.
Looking at other parts of the city, I saw religious and family oriented stickers’ as well. Going to the downtown area at night, a large number of people can be seen out and about. This can be seen as a perfect chance to see what different people choose to show off on their cars. As Fort Collins is a popular tourist city, a lot of people visit every day. Going through parking lots in downtown gave me a view of the life of the families that have lived here for a significant amount of time and are a part of the amazing Fort Collins community. I saw a large number of athletic stickers as well as stickers of several other states along with cars of different plates. This shows that the people of Fort Collins can be seen as outgoing and athletic who are also fond of travelling

In conclusion, the bumper stickers of each community represent how they view the world and we can use these stickers as windows into other people’s minds.

Bumper Sticker & Summary

Bumper Sticker

As an international student who doesn't have the car here, i didn't really notice about the bumper stickers around the cars. And I walked and checked the cars in the parking lot in Kingsooper. i found that there are many cars have the bumper stickers in the back. And I would like to say, the bumper sticker is very interesting and funny, most of the bumper sticker is about the things that the drivers want the people to know and some of the bumper sticker is about the political.

On of the interesting bumper sticker I remember is the “baby on board” sign which has the cartoon characters of mom, dad, sons, daughters, dogs, cats, turtles, and who knows what other family members, plastered upon the back window of family SUVs. Perhaps it’s the latest status sign to see who can fill their rear window with the most cartoon images. Maybe they’ll move on to aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, neighbors, news carrier. The another bumper sticker that i notice is a sign which shows"God I Love You" . I would consider the driver is the Christian and he or she wants the people to know how he or she loves the "God".
Generally speaking, i really like the bumper stickers because people can say or show anything they like in public and the different types of bumper stickers have different types of sighs which is really interesting and humorous.

Summary

In the letter by Nathan Brown, the author wrote this letter to UC Chancellor named Linda P.B. Katehi as UC Davis to express that he is pretty angry for the police brutality they made for students and he claims his demand for the resignation. After that, Brown explains how students in pain and injured by this politic and keep using "You are responsible" to show the chancellor how outrage he thinks of the action. In addition, Brown indicates why the Chancellor should take the responsible to students and blames Katehi in a very strong way. In the end of the letter, Brown considers Chancellor Katehi is the most important reason that threat to the safety of students at UC Davis and Brown also asks for the resign because of the bad action from her.

Bumper Sticker and Summary

As you wander through Fort Collins, you see many types of vehicles, scooters, motorcycles, etc. If you observe closely enough you notice 75% of these motorized vehicles have some sort of bumper sticker on them. But what do these bumper stickers represent? Many of these stickers represent something different and can tell you a lot about the person and their lifestyle. Being on campus you observe many types of vehicles. Some of the bumper stickers I've seen on campus are fraternity/sorority letters, political, outdoors, humorous, and many more kinds of sticker. Which makes sense because CSU has a variety of diverse people and groups. I witnessed a sticker a couple days ago that quoted "Hillary For Prison 2016". First thing that came to my mind was, wow this person does not like Hillary. But then I also realized this person is a politician. This person has this sticker on her car because it is trying to send a message to convince others to not vote for Hillary. The second place I observed bumper stickers was my complex parking lot. The first thing I realized walking to get my mail was that the bumper stickers are somewhat the same. Then I made an assumption that most of the kids that live in this condo complex probably are all enrolled at CSU. Even though I was at a different location, the stickers were similar to the ones I saw on campus. In conclusion, I believe the people that put bumper stickers on their vehicle want to send a message to others about what they think, or what they enjoy doing in their life, because you can really show off that message driving through town.

Summary:
In the passage Nathan Brown writes a letter to Linda P.B. Katehi to express what he thinks about police brutality that happened at a "peaceful protest" at UC Davis campus. Brown wanted immediate resignation as he held Linda accountable for the brutality. At the rally students protested about tuition increases and police brutality. Even though the rally was suppose to be non-violence, Students and participants were still arrested and some even hospitalized. Brown expresses that there should be a place for political and a place where free speech can be endorsed on campus. Being a Chancellor that Linda was, Brown holds her accountable for why this happened and that she should resign because she is responsible for the "safety" that is held on campus. The peers and students will be the audience of this letter to hopefully send a message to UC Davis on what should be able to happen on campus.

Bumper Stickers and Summary

The CSU campus is a diverse community filled with people from all walks of life. This can be demonstrated through the type of bumper stickers the different communities have on their cars. I first walked through the Scott Bioengineering parking lot, and then through the King Soopers parking lot, and found a vast majority had similar stickers. One of these being CSU Ram stickers. This was common throughout both parking lots I searched. Another theme I found in the Scott parking lot was a few cars that demonstrated the “hippy” culture. They had stickers that said “Be Hippy” or peace signs filled with tie dye, and also other popular symbols filled with tie die from the hippy community. These stickers can represent a way of life that they enjoy living, and could also give you a look into their political ideas, based on the way they live their life.
I then saw the other spectrum of the world. There were multiple either lifted jeeps, or lifted diesel trucks in these parking lots. They would be sporting the typical CSU Ram sticker, but also had a vast amount of performance stickers. This demonstrates their personal interest, which would be tuning their truck for optimal performance. Also on these vehicles I saw a few political stickers, that would get their views across, but also tried to use a humorous manor to do so. The sticker read “Gun Control means using both hands”, this sticker demonstrates his view on the major issue in the world today, gun control. But also tries to make it funny, to get the point across. Some of the bumper stickers could lead you to assume some things about the person driving the vehicle. For example, I found a truck that has an American flag, and then the yellow don’t tread on me flag. From these stickers we could infer that he is a Republican, and has the majority of the same ideas as a normal Republican. Witnessing the differences and he amount of diversity on campus was actually very interesting, and gave me an insight on the type of people we have on campus.
Nathan Brown, the assistant professor in the department of English at the University of California at Davis writes about a police brutality protest on campus being broken up through the use of police brutality. The protesters on campus were protesting the use of police brutality on the UC Berkeley campus, and the students were using the same peaceful tactics used by the Berkeley students. Chancellor Kathy then proceeds to issue police in riot gear, and equipped with mace, batons, and tear gas guns to handle the on campus protest. The police use brute force to disband the protest, spraying mace in the teachers and students throat and face, and then using their batons to disband them. The police injured multiple students and teachers, and one of the students was still coughing up blood forty-five minutes after being maced in their throat. Mr. Brown then proceeds to explain his reasoning for his issue of resignation of Chancellor Katehi. This includes Mr. Browns reasoning for Katehi not being able to keep the students safe, and the implication of threats upon stude
