Blog 2

I decided to to read "Confessions of an Ivy League Frat Boy: Inside Dartmouth's Hazing Abuses," written by Janey Reitman. I chose to read this article because I have many friends who are in frats and I also participated in rushing events last year and I've heard some good stories about hazing. Hazing comes in many forms and can been seen throughout sporting groups or clubs of all kinds. Cases of hazing seem to be worse when involving fraternities or in even some cases sororities. Hazing in Greek life is not a new issue Universities are facing but rather has been an ongoing issue for a long period of time. Hazing cases in fraternities seem to always be revolved around sexual assault, violence and substance abuse, from what I've seen personally and also stated by Janey Reitman. Not all cases of hazing end up with death but some do and the pledges who do make it through might not ever be the same. With all this being said the stakeholder for the hazing issue has to be faculty and President of the University.
Solving this problem of hazing will not be easy to do but some things might help. The proposal I have to solving this problem is to have a outside party or person be the over watcher of the pledging process. This person can act as a supervisor throughout the semester or how ever long the pledging process is, and report any cases of hazing. After this supervisor has left and is no longer around an anonymous survey will be taken to see if hazing has been an issue since the supervisor has been gone. I believe this is the best and most logical stakeholder for the situation for the reason being they seem to be the biggest factor that can hold disciplinary acts for the frats/sororities. The University can hold the power to weather or not the frat/sorority can still be active through their school and punish the members involved accordingly. The act of hazing will never fully go away, but if a solution to making hazing not as serious can be put into effect the stories of kids being seriously injured or killed will decrease tremendously.
