Coming into P3 I have thought about what problems would be enjoyable to research, as I am someone who will only take the time to research something I actually enjoy learning about. Although I enjoyed the topic about why or why not college athletes should be paid, or the controversy of cheating in Universities, I wanted to take a break from the course theme and Ethics and Higher Education and find a topic outside of the box that I'll enjoy researching. My topic for P3 will be the investigation of the NFL regulations. As the NFL is one of the most followed sports in the nation, there is always something news worthy that will be exposed over the media about a certain team or player. My research question is something I have always been curious about and something I would like to find more information on why this happens. My question is; why NFL players and teams are fined enormous amounts of money for the smallest acts against regulations. For an example, Antonio Brown, a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, a phenomenal athlete and a star in the NFL was fined $9,115 for "twerking" in the end zone, and was also fined $6,076 for wearing cleats that didn't match the "NFL uniform code". Although this could be a bias topic, I will not choose a specific side, but yet go further into depth with the NFL Operations Regulators and find the reasoning behind this.
As there can be many potential stakeholders for this topic, the players of the teams are the biggest ones at stake. The players are the ones who are being fined for the actions that are noticeable, but yet the players team be a big stakeholder as well. From the athletes perspective, the family of the player can be a stakeholder that is impacted that the media doesn't see. For example, not everyone knows the financial situation for players and their families. Being fined thousands of dollars can potentially hurt the family financially. As we all know professional athletes make a great amount of money doing what they do best, but the reasoning behind fining player thousands of dollars to fix the issue is something I would like to know more about.
Coming into P3 I will have to be careful on bias articles due to peoples viewpoints picking one side of why they are fined and why they shouldn't be fined, Warfare vs. Fanfare. Researching the Football Operations of the NFL will be a great source to research and I can't wait to understand the reasoning. On behalf of this topic for P3 I am currently very interested on the answers I will find.
